Face-Cut

The face cut is the first cut made when falling a tree (see also; gob, sink cut, notch). This work came after an extensive period of research while working as a tree surgeon in Glasgow. In the performance, the figure explores a tactile environment consisting of recycled wood, architectural metal, and textiles. This work follows a looping structure which uses failure and dysfunctional movement patterns to test the limits of what the body is capable of. The body becomes an extension of the sculptural figures in the environment.

Examining archetypes of femininity and masculinity became an interest from working in male dominated trades environments. The installation uses specific materials which relates to building trades: unistrut steel. The frame built from unistrut acts as an armature for the performer to exist within, and the costume pieces left in the installation becomes a relic from the act which took place.
